Something that not many have seemed to notice about this morning’s announcement was the image posted in the background at the end. Illidan attacking Gul’dan! The implications are amazing for how layered and complex this story will be as it unfolds!
Imo Illidan has always been both: friend AND foe.
I think, that is the causing why he is such a cool and popular character. He is not just the “evil guy, we wanna kill” he is more than that. Yes, he has a lust for power and he did evil things.
But we also know why this corruption started:
because he was under huge pressure,
because some people were treating him unfair
and because he was in love with a girl, which – at the end – decided to couple with his brother.
And what did he do in Warcraft 3? Did he try to kill them all? Did he try to conquer the world? No. First HE saved Tyrande (Maiev was willing to let her die) and then he went on and left Azeroth, to build up something new elsewhere.
And yes, he was forced to help Kil’jaeden and he didn’t strive too much against that. Instead of choosing the hard path and fight against Kil’jaeden for his freedom he took the simple one – and joined forces with the demons.
Maybe that’s the big thing we can blame him for: he always seem to choose the simple path and gives up to early. But he is not the typical evil guy – he is no Gul’dan!
I hope the devs will remember that Illidan! And not the “I’m standing on the top of the BLack Tempel and do nothing than beeing the end boss and die at the end”-one, we saw in BC.
If they remember the potential, that Illidan has, we’ll see a strong Illidan-Character in “LEGION”! A character we can have a love-hate relationship with. A character that we can fight against first and than can ally with – against the legion and Gul’dan. Or maybe the other way round?^^
AND I hope that both of them – Gul’dan & Illidan – will not die again!
