After the first round of job openings following the BlizzCon 2026 game announcement, the team has added two new roles to its openings list. One of those is for a Voice-Over Designer.
A Voice-Over Designer is typically brought in during the late Pre-Production phase of an AAA video game’s lifecycle. Or roughly when the video game is 15-30% complete.
This also means no voice-over actors have recorded yet. Those are brought in when the game is 80-95% complete.
Entering late pre-production puts an AAA title on a roughly three-year runway to launch. At that rate, StarCraft remains on track for its projected 2030 release with a bit of leeway.
StarCraft Shooter entered Late Pre-Production Phase
What’s a Voice-Over Designer? A Voice-Over (VO) Designer (hired between 15-30% complete) focuses on the technical framework for audio integration rather than talent casting, which falls under the VO Director (when the game is 80-95% complete). A VO Designer builds structured directories, naming systems, and data protocols to keep vast audio libraries organized and instantly accessible.
An audio management protocol tells the game engine exactly when to trigger audio and text. For example, it controls when a button click plays a sound, when a voice-over file starts a character’s dialogue, and how subtitles pace themselves to match that speech. When working with multiple languages, each localized file must follow a strict naming convention so the engine knows exactly which asset to trigger.
In short, a Voice-Over Designer designs the engine systems that handle human speech and audio effects, dynamic triggers, and file paths.
This job opening usually signals that the story narrative is in its final stages of production.
