During the BlizzCon 2026 World of Warcraft: Forever Deep Dive Panel (read the transcript), the developers explained what World of Warcraft: Forever is and isn’t. Basically, this is Year One. The 2004 state. But this is not the same timeline as the one we have in World of Warcraft: Midnight. In that Midnight timeline, Dalaran was still behind its pink dome in Year One.

In Forever, Dalaran’s pink dome is down, and the Kirin Tor communicated with Zephras Isle and helped them out in a time of need.

In the transcript, you will read some things that happened in the Midnight timeline’s Year One might not happen in Forever. That’s bold. Other content signals this isn’t entirely the Vanilla we experienced in 2004-2007.

For example, Dalaran is not the only zone that wasn’t accessible in the original Vanilla but is now accessible in Forever. Here are the spoilers coming.

World of Warcraft: Forever – Not Quite Vanilla. Spoiler Zone

I had contemplated the sightings from Menethil Harbor, and even from the boat that goes to Southshore. This time I analyzed what I was looking at in more detail. I could see the Dalaran tower in the distance, but I couldn’t identify the towers on the far left.

I shapeshifted into Aquatic Form and swam toward what I was certain was Gilneas. I was correct. In Vanilla WoW (2004-2007), Gilneas wasn’t accessible or visible. It simply didn’t exist in-game. An empty lot of land. It was a small area blocked by a wall and a gate for show. If anyone got past the wall, there was literally nothing inside. You couldn’t reach it by land or sea.

But World of Warcraft: Forever isn’t the Vanilla we remember. It has more lands than what we had access to in Vanilla.

It’s a copy of the Gilneas we had in the Cataclysm expansion, but with a few changes. The wall and the gate are intact (pre-Cataclysm). Buildings destroyed by the Forsaken in Cataclysm are intact in Forever. The area that was sunk in the Cataclysm is okay in Forever. The City of Gilneas’ cathedral has the Alliance flag and a bunch of first aid boxes and tents.

This is, naturally, a work-in-progress Gilneas placeholder. So it is not final. I looked it up online, and this had been discovered on September 17. Datamining also mentioned a PvP Battlegrounds.

The question is… when will Blizzard open up Gilneas, and how much work will they do to change it into what it looked like in Year One before the Cataclysm broke the walls and before the Forsaken assaulted Gilneas with Garrosh’s blessing?

In Year One, there was no Garrosh. He was still a weakling in Nagrand. The Alliance and the Horde hadn’t traveled to Outland in Year One. So what does Gilneas look like in Year One? Did the Worgen overwhelm the Gilneans? Will history be different in this timeline?

Blizzard copied the entire zone and assets from the Cataclysm era and pasted it into the Forever game. Now they are making changes to make the zone Year One ready. Ask yourself. Can Blizzard also add Quel’Thalas as a Year One zone without needing a Burning Crusade-era portal? That would require copy/pasting the World of Warcraft: Midnight zone and remaking it to resemble a Year One state.

Well, I did check. But no. Quel’Thalas doesn’t exist in the World of Warcraft: Forever game. What I explored was the same coastal mountain that existed in Vanilla WoW. The map says there is land up there, but if you swim along the coast, the northernmost point I reached is partially the bottom of Ghostlands. North of me, it is just ocean. No Quel’Thalas.

So don’t hold your breath on Quel’Thalas just yet. But if it ever comes to World of Warcraft: Forever, it won’t be the version we saw in the Burning Crusade expansion. It will be very different, reimagined for this brand-new alternate Year One where things happened differently in this new timeline. Differences

What is different about Gilneas between World of Warcraft: Forever and World of Warcraft: Midnight?

The Ruins of Gilneas’ bridge has a missing lamppost in World of Warcraft: Midnight. The developers restored the missing lamp in World of Warcraft: Forever as if nothing happened to it in Year One.

The area outside the Gilnean cathedral has a few Alliance flags, tents, and first aid boxes. This isn’t there in the Live Midnight servers.

Some buildings in the Stormglen Village are abandoned with cobwebs and some stuff lies on the ground or deteriorated in World of Warcraft: Forever. The village is fine and populated in the Live Midnight servers. I recall in the level 1-15 Worgen starting location, there was a spiders issue.

This area in Shadowglen Village has a boat dock in the post-Cataclysm era. The dock is missing in World of Warcraft: Forever. This shows that Gilneas is a work-in-progress.

After the Cataclysm, Duskhaven was sunk beneath the sea. In the Worgen level 1-15 starting zone, you quested in Duskhaven, and as you level up, out of the blue you feel an earthquake. When you emerge from the basement, Duskhaven is underwater. Gone.

In World of Warcraft: Forever, Duskhaven is all good and intact.

Same building above, shown here in the Live Midnight servers. The whole Duskhaven area sunk underwater.

One concern. In the Live Midnight servers, the main bridge connecting the giant gate to the Greymane Manor is fine. In Forever, that bridge has collapsed.

The giant gate is intact in Forever. There is no signs of destruction or Forsaken catapults or tents in the giant gate area inside Gilneas or outside. The same NPCs that were outside the gates of Gilneas in Vanilla are still there. Even the weapon vendor.
