Thoughts

DC Comics has released World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen # 4. If it’s not available where you live at, you can go to the Comixology Digital Store to read it as a PDF eBook.

In this issue, the events transpired as a Worgen race player through level 1-10 in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm come to happen. The Worgen invade Gilneas City. Liam Greymane and his men lose Greymane Square and are forced to retreat.

Lord Genn Greymane sends you to the local prison to release Lord Darius Crowley. It was the patriotic sacrifice of Darius and his men which allowed the Gilneans to evacuate to safety. Players might remember the epic last stand at the Cathedral of Gilneas City. That’s when worgen stopped attacking the front door of the Cathedral, and you hear this is not a good sign. An in-game cinematic plays out showing worgen jump through the mosaic windows and you lose consciousness.

These in-game scenes happen in the issue # 4, and while it might sound redundant to what you already know in-game, there is much more backstory and lore that you didn’t get to witness from the point of view of your in-game character.

The Gilnean survivors evacuate the city and flee to Duskhaven. Lorna Crowley slashes at Genn Greymane blaming him for leaving Darius Crowley to the worgen carnage. Something that visibly affects the monarch with regret and guiltyness.

There’s some criticism to make. There was some lore in this issue with Malfurion and Cenarius concerning the Pack form, and it was nice to see some of the events behind the invasion of Gilneas City. However, it felt rushed. It barely got space to recreate some of the dialogues, and scenes from the game.

I do understand that players are meant to experience it in-game, but it would have been nice to maybe extend the battle for Gilneas to a couple issues even if it meant making it a seven-issues comic book. Maybe let us see what Liam, Genn, Godfrey, or Crowley did behind-the-scenes while players were busy doing certain quests so that we could see the same battle through different angles and phases.s

The next issue wraps up the World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen mini-series. Krennan created a better potion at the end of issue # 4, giving Genn Greymane the hope he needed. He asks Liam to order Godfrey the hunt and capture of worgen without slaying them.

In-game, this is the potion that helps the Gilnean turned into Worgen recover their mind and will as a partial cure, which leads to the Worgen playable race.

In issue # 5, we should expect to see the fate of Halford Ramsey and Alpha Prime (Ralaar), the death of Liam Greymane, and possibly the Forsaken Invasion.

We might get to see Genn reveal his truth at The Blackwald. Genn has a secret that has burdened him for a long time. He is a worgen. A condition he’s kept in check with the help of Belysra and her prayers to Elune.

It’s hard to tell what will be shown in the last issue wrapping up the mini-series. What will be left out, what shocking revelation might still be lingering as a climax to the story. Overall, World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen is a worthwhile story to read to learn the true origins of the worgen, the whereabouts of the Scythe of Elune, and how exactly the Gilnean got the curse and how they were able to regain control of their will, and their ties with the night elves.
