I arrived at the convention early on Saturday with the intent of playing some games before my day got crazy. I was able to get right into the WoW section and played the Demon Hunter starting area. I knew my time was limited, so I didn’t spend a ton of time with the character creation screen. I chose a Night Elf, as you can only select from Night Elf or Blood Elf, I hit random a few times until I got something that looked interesting, and entered the world. The Demon Hunter creation seems to have more options than another class or race when it comes to customization. I am looking forward to what I can create when the game comes out.

Once you are in the game you are greeted with a whole host of voice overed introductions. It’s a nice way to immediately immerse you into what feels like a very story driven experience. There is a new popup in the middle of the screen above your action bars that shows a portrait of the speaking character as well as subtitles for the actual dialog. This popup occurs quite frequently as you continue through the zone on various quests. While the experience feels like WoW at the core, the new mechanics to storytelling put a fresh spin on the questing experience we have grown accustomed to over the past 11 years.

While I have some experience playing melee characters in WoW, my primary toons are all casters, so playing the demon hunter was definitely a different experience than I’m used to. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The class feels very quick and agile. The cooldowns are almost non-existent on the first few abilities you are given. You even have an ability that allows you to dash several yards in front of the direction you are facing. They also have the ability to double-jump, which no other class has.

Then, just as I was starting to get into the groove of questing, I was tapped on the shoulder and my playtime was up. I wish I could have gone back and played some more, but my BlizzCon schedule was jam packed and I had no time to breathe. I will definitely be pre-ordering Legion so I can access the Demon Hunter early. While I don’t know if I will switch mains, I am certainly looking forward to playing through the starting area for the story alone.
