Season 3, Ep. 6: Scar Tissue
1 — It is nightfall. Jim wakes up and sees Tabitha by the window. He asks what’s up with her. She had a nightmare and couldn’t sleep again. She refuses to talk about it. She regrets not doing more. Jim says she did her best. She confronts Jim. How he knows that she did. They have a massive fight and ending up talking about their divorce. Julie and Ethan walke up to their loud argument.
The monsters screech in the distance.
Jim leaves to the living room and slams the bedroom door.
In the morning, Tabitha looks at Victor’s crayon drawings while drinking a cup of tea. Julie enters the kitchen. Tabitha says she slept in till late. Julie asks where her Dad is. Jim went with a team to the lake to get the rest of the food. He is coming back tomorrow.
Julie asks if they are taking day trips to the lake now. Tabitha says the people need the food. Julie says that decision had nothing to do with the screaming match last night. Tabitha apologized she had to hear that. Julie says the people in Colony House pretty sure might have heard it too.
2 — In the Bar, Boyd asks Jade if he thinks the Bottle Tree’s numbers could be some kind of code. Jade adds: “Or an algorithm. Who knows?”
Jade says the fact is that Tabitha was pushed out of a lighthouse and somehow ended up near a hiking trail in Camden, Maine. Jade says that’s impossible. Unless she experienced some kind of quantum event. Or wormhole, or any number of theoretical events that would allow her to get from the lighthouse in the woods to Camden, Maine.
Jade jumps to another theory about the lighthouse occupying the same space as Camden, Maine being a dimensional rift. At some point, Boyd is lost with all the physics mumbo jumbo and asks Jade to stop. He thought he had something exciting to show him.
Jade looks around the wall and signals with both hands all around the wall … yeah!
Boyd has this very lost me dude face. Jade says he understands why Boyd might be skeptical. Including himself. Something tells him that all of these numbers and events need to mean something. The Bottle Tree was important to Miranda (Victor’s Mom). According to Tabitha, Miranda was the one who had a connection to this place long before she arrived.
Boyd asks Jade if he looked at the bottles from the other tree. Jade grows a confused face. What other tree? The one in Maine?
Boyd explains that Sara and he found another Bottle Tree in the woods. It was not a portal tree, but it still had bottles hanging from it. Messages inside the bottles. Boyd pulled one down that said “1864.”
Jade starts looking at all the numbers pinned to the wall. He also finds one slip of paper that says: “1864.”
Jade asks Boyd where the other tree is located.
3 — In the Colony House, Henry fools around with a large car toy in Victor’s bedroom. Victor enters his bedroom. Henry apologizes. He was looking for Victor and decided to wait for his return.
Henry says he hasn’t seen one of these large children’s cars in a long time. Victor says it belonged to Mrs. Davis. Henry asks why she would have one of these. Victor says Mrs. Davis’ son saw an ad in the back of a magazine and wanted one. The child was dying from an illness. Mrs. Davis drove a long distance to the only store she could find that had the car toy. After purchasing it, she headed back home, but she found the fallen tree on the road and got stuck in this place. Mrs. Davis died a long time ago.
Henry wondered if Victor could show him around the place today. Victor says there is something he wants to do today by himself. It is very important.
Henry asks if he can tag along. Victor doesn’t think that’s a good idea. (he is heading into the tunnels where the monsters sleep during daylight. He doesn’t tell his Dad.)
Henry decides not to insist and says he will get out of his way.
Victor blocks the exit and tries to find the words. Then settles to say it is very dangerous what he needs to do and he doesn’t want his Dad to get hurt. But his Dad can walk with him for a bit, on his way to his destination if he wants.
Henry accepts. He would like that.
4 — In the clinic, Marielle inspects the medicine cabinet making inventory. Kenny enters to bring a box of all the medicines he collected from the recently arrived ambulance.
Marielle thanks Kenny. He offered to help take the box downstairs, but she got it. She asks him to go rest. Kenny exits the clinic and closes the ambulance’s door.
Boyd approaches and asks how he’s doing. Kenny has a hard time composing words but ends up saying he doesn’t want to talk about it right now, but he’s fine. Boyd accepts that and lets him talk when he is ready.
5 — Boyd enters the clinic to visit Randall — who is grunting in pain. Randall is not fully conscious and never sees Boyd. Boyd decides to leave. Kristi intercepts him.
Boyd asks if Kristi is not supposed to be in bed after her foot injury. She says he’s not one to talk about taking it easy (considering his Parkinson’s disease).
Kristi says Randall is doing better. Boyd tries to explain why he came to see Randall, but can’t find the words. It’s due to guilt for leaving Randall behind to the monsters, but he doesn’t tell Kristi.
Kristi cuts him off and informs Boyd that the ambulance came fully stoked. There was a portable ultrasound onboard. Kristi tells Boyd that when he sees Fatima, to tell her to come on by to make an Ultrasound of the baby.
He will and asks Kristi not to tell Randall that he came by.
6 — In the Colony House, Fatima asks Ellis to say something. Ellis responds they need to go see Kristi. There’s gotta be some sort of explanation about her rotten vegetable cravings. Fatima doesn’t want to see Kristi. Doesn’t want everyone looking at her the same way Ellis is. Afraid of her. He affirms he is not afraid of Fatima.
Fatima argues they don’t need to see Kristi. Maybe the cravings go away soon. Ellis holds her face and says they shouldn’t do this alone. They need Kristi’s help.
Boyd knocks on the door and says he comes with good news. Ellis opens the door and Boyd immediately senses something different. They are worried. He asks what’s going on. Ellis invites his Dad into the bedroom and closes the door behind him.
7 — At the Motel Sign, Donna drops lots of rocks down inside the empty pool for material to cover the wall where Dale teleported from the tree. For now, Dale’s corpse is covered with a large tarp hanging over the edge of the pool.
Tabitha approaches Donna. She heard what happened to Dale. She’s so sorry. Tabitha asks Donna if they were close. Donna says Dale was a pain in her ass for almost 2 years. He had some good moments, though. He would have loved to see Donna hauling these fucking stones across town. Better thing he would have liked is to leave his corpse here to rot to ruin everyone’s breakfast every morning.
Tabitha says she was there when Dale entered the tree hole. He was just trying to help. Donna says she is sure that Dale had some shitty remark on his way out. Tabitha chuckles briefly. Donna asks Tabitha if she is okay. That meeting yesterday couldn’t have been easy.
Tabitha tells Donna everyone expects her to have all the answers, and she feels like she let them all and her family down.
Donna says her children thought she was dead. They don’t need answers from her Mom. They just need their Mom.
Tabitha asks what if the people in the meeting were right and she wasted the only opportunity they had to leave this place.
Donna asks to look at Dale down there in the pool. Tabitha went through that same tree. That could have been Tabithan down there where Dale’s corpse now is. Don’t try to be a hero. Be with your kids and don’t take that for granted. Donna says she is done with the lecture. Donna starts to put on her gloves to resume working on the rocks.
Tabatha unexpectedly hugs Donna and says she is sorry about the loss of her friend.
8 — In the woods, Henry asks Victor if he wants to go into the tunnels where those monsters live. Victor says he doesn’t want to. He has to. Henry asks because you want something from the tunnels to help those people? Victor says it might save Henry too.
They arrive at the entrance of the tunnels. Victor turns around and tells his Dad, Henry, that he should go now. Victor asks if he knows the way back to town. Henry says he is not going back. He is going with Victor into the tunnels. Victor says that’s not a good idea. Henry says he just got his son back. He’s not losing him again. He’ll protect Victor. If you are going to do this, we’ll do it together. Victor agrees.
Victor has a box full of toy soldiers. Henry asks what those are for. Victor says breadcrumbs to not get lost in the tunnels.
9 — Ellis explains to Boyd the cravings Fatima has and rationalizes that maybe this place has an effect on the baby but that it doesn’t need to mean that the baby is not okay. Boyd is slowly digesting the news and tries to agree. Boyd informs Ellis and Fatima that Kristi now has an Ultrasound machine from the recently arrived ambulance.
Fatima doesn’t want the ultrasound. Ellis asks Boyd to let them talk for a minute about it. In private, Fatima sobs and says she will do the Ultrasound tomorrow. Ellis pleas with her to do it right now. He just wants her and the baby to be okay.
10 — In the clinic, Randall is finally awake. Marielle says good that he is awake. Randall asks the fuck she wants. She needs to change the bandages on his face and throat. Randall says the bandages are fine. She insists she needs to make sure there is no infection. He agrees. She needs him to sit down. Marielle removes the bandages and says she sees no sign of infection and the stitches are holding well. There will be a lot of bruising and discomfort.
Randall asks Marielle to show him. She brings a mirror. He asks her to give him a minute. She leaves.
11 — Kenny looks for something in the kitchen’s drawers. He exits the house through the backdoor. Julie is leaning on the side of the house, hidden, and starts to slap away at the weed smoke when she hears the door (as if that works).
Kenny stands by the porch and leans over with a smile when he sees Julie’s “Im-busted” face. He asks Julie what she is doing. She asks if he won’t tell her parents.
Kenny responds if she is caught, he was never here. Julie says: “Deal. You want some?” Kenny responds: “Don’t push it.”
Kenny says he was looking for a screwdriver that his Mom kept in the junk drawer in the kitchen. She says something about her dad moving things around when he gets fidgety — probably when her Mom was gone for 4 days. Kenny says it’s alright, but looks uncomfortable.
12 — In the tunnels, Victor reaches the chamber where he found Jasper (the puppet) days before. Now it is no longer where he thought it was. All the stuff the monsters had lying on the ground is gone. Victor tells his Dad, Henry, that there was a clock and a wheelchair in this chamber, too.
Victor says maybe they should go deeper into the tunnels. They can’t leave without Jasper. His dad highly advises him not to go deeper into the tunnels. Victor insists it is important. They continue into another path in the tunnels.
13 — Boyd waits outside the Colony House. Ellis exits the house and joins Boyd. Ellis says Fatima is coming. She just needs a minute.
14 — Fatima walks down the stairs. Elgin is taking Polaroid photos of every member of the Colony House for an album. He will make a collage on the wall if she wants to check it out later. Fatima ignores him and leaves the house. Fatima tells Ellis and Boyd that she doesn’t want to say anything to Kristi about the rotten vegetable cravings unless they have to.
Fatima wants Boyd to be there, and he is surprised. He answers whatever you need.
15 — In the woods, Jade arrives at the second Bottle Tree that Boyd mentioned finding with Sara.
Suddenly, Jade hears Bartender Tom’s voice: “And then there were two.”
Jade says: “For fuck’s sake!”
(Bartender Tom died the day the Matthews house collapsed on top of Jim, Tom, and one of the bus passengers. He was eaten by one of the monsters).
Tom says it is ironic that a drunk is looking for answers in a tree filled with bottles.
Jade looks at Tom and chuckles. Why is he wiping clean that glass? Tom says a man does what a man does.
Tom asks if he thinks this Bottle Tree is going to tell him anything. Jade says he thinks this place has a design. That nothing in here is here by accident.
Tom says maybe that’s Jade’s problem. Nature has a design and that is not nature.
Tom has a long discussion trying to steer Jade out of his path. The Bottle Tree might mean nothing.
Jade says Miranda had visions about these trees. You don’t have visions about things that have no importance or meaning.
Tom mentions what about Jade’s own visions: the Civil War soldier. The man crushed by a boulder in the Root Cellar.
Jade says those are different things that has nothing to do with the Bottle Trees.
Tom says the man Jade used to be who built a company and sold it, was smarter. Maybe Jade needs to sober up and give that former-self guy a call.
Tom disappears before Jade looks in his direction. Jade gets angry that Tom could have made his point in a nicer way.
16 — Ethan looks at a botanical book with different types of plants. Tabitha asks him about the book. He says it belonged to Tian-Chen. Tabitha smiles and asks if he learned to read Chinese while she was gone. He says no.
Tabitha asks where Julie is. Ethan says she went for a walk. Ethan asks if Tian-Chen is with her husband. Tabitha would like to think that she is. Ethan wonders if Tian-Chen and her husband were happy. Tabitha understands where he is coming from and apologizes for the scene he heard last night when his parents were fighting loudly.
Ethan sighs. He says he liked it better when they arrived at this place. Everyone was so scared, there was no time to be angry. He wishes it was like that again. Ethan asks what Jade is doing at the bar. He asks if that’s why both were fighting last night. Tabitha explains that Jade is trying to figure out a puzzle.
Ethan asks what kind of puzzle.
They are interrupted by the sound of a door creaking upstairs. Tabitha asks if someone is upstairs. Ethan says no. More creaking is heard followed by someone running loudly across the floor upstairs.
Tabitha walks upstairs and finds three of the freaky children. They repeat: “Anghkooey.” Tabitha asks why they are in her house. She tells them she tried to help them. Asks them to leave them alone. They surround her and she kneels in a corner by the stairs. Ethan comes running and asks if she is alright. Ethan can’t see the children and asks if she is okay.
17 — Donna finishes the pile of rocks to cover Dale’s corpse encrusted on the pool’s wall. Kenny asks if she has room at the Colony House for him. Tian-Chen was the only thing that made that house feel like home.
Donna says Kenny is welcome to live in the Colony House and holds him close. Kenny asks jokingly if she is not still throwing those sex parties up there. She chuckles and asks him to go pack his shit before she changes her mind.
18 — In the Bar, Jade writes all the Bottle Tree numbers in a single sheet of paper pinned to the wall. Tabitha and Ethan enter the Bar. She says Ethan wants to help with the puzzle. Jade says good because the puzzle has just gotten a lot more interesting. Tabitha asks how. Jade says it turns out there is a second Bottle Tree. Jade says the numbers in each bottle are all the same as the first Bottle Tree. The placements of the bottles, however obviously different. In the second tree, they are all written in cursive. Some of the numbers repeat themselves over and over.
Jade is convinced that something in these numbers or dates is the key to something that they need to understand.
19 — In the clinic, Marielle tells Randall he must apply a cream after cleaning and changing his bandages. Randall is an asshole and says he heard her the first time. She says he can now leave the clinic as he’s out of danger. Randall asks Marielle why she pretends to be okay (in reference to what happened to Randall, Marielle, and Julie in Season 2).
Marielle doesn’t want to talk about that experience. Randall says she pretends to be okay spending the night with Kristi as if everything is normal. He doesn’t get to pretend in that bus. He is terrified. Marielle says then he shouldn’t be alone on the bus. There is room in the clinic. She asks him to grab his stuff and move in. Randall agrees.
20 — In the tunnels, Henry keeps pushing Victor to head back and figure out a plan. Victor rejects this and wishes to continue further into the tunnels until he finds Jasper. They finally find a chamber that Victor hadn’t explored before further into the tunnels. There he finds Jasper, the clock, the wheelchair, a parrot cage, the suitcase with the many US States stickers, and the monster with the mechanic suit… sleeping.
Victor grabs the puppet and puts it in a bag. Victor tells his Dad that they are ready to leave the tunnels. Henry looks at a jacket on the table and loses self-control telling Victor that this belonged to his Mom.
Speaking this loud awakes the monster. A second monster tells Victor: “You know, Victor, if you keep coming down here, one of these days, we’ll make you stay.”
Victor pushes his Dad and yells: “Go, Go, Go!” — as screeches start to echo throughout the tunnels.
21 — Julie walks down the road and asks Randall if he is moving out. He drops the last of his bags on the ground. Randall says yes. He is moving out to a nice condo down the road, in jest. Ocean views. Indoor Gym. Julie says that sounds nice, but where is he really moving to? He says Marielle offered to stay at the clinic.
Julie asks how Marielle is doing (in reference to what happened to the three of them in Season 2). Randall says she pretends like nothing happened. Randall asks how Julie is doing. Julie says she gets stoned a lot and that helps. Randall asks if Julie got any weed on her. She pulls a small bag case from her pocket and waves it.
22 — Victor and Henry exited the tunnels and the door of the canned-goods truck opened. Victor asks his father to bring the stuff inside the truck.
Henry asks why the monsters had Miranda’s stuff down there. Victor says the monsters sometimes take objects from people. Henry asks what is this place? Victor says he stays here when it is too loud at the Colony House sometimes. He used to hide here at night sometimes before the people came.
Henry is saddened to hear that because that meant Victor was all alone for years hiding in that truck to survive the monsters. Victor says he is okay and they found Jasper, which means they can now save people. Henry asks how the puppet can save people. Victor answers the puppet knows things.
Victor heard the puppet tell Christopher a story about this place once and they need to make Jasper tell it again.
23 — In the clinic, Kristi applies gel to Fatima’s belly and tells them to keep in mind it is still early days of pregnancy and to expect to see a shape about the size of an acorn. If lucky, they might see hands and legs but to keep their expectations in check.
Kristi moves the wand around Fatima’s belly and watches the Ultrasound monitor. They grow concerned when Kristi’s face makes gestures along with her vocal noises. Kristi responds that Fatima is not pregnant. There is nothing in her uterus. Fatima insists and Kristi searches again and explains the baby should be at that spot in the monitor but there is nothing visible there. Fatima says that’s impossible. Ellis interrupts and says to Fatima that she must tell Kristi what happened in the past days.
24 — In the Colony House, Elgin pins several Polaroid photos along a cord. The next photo is the one he captured of Fatima. He looks at it and suddenly the image of the mummified woman in the kimono suit starts to appear behind Fatima in the photo. Seconds later, that woman grabs Elgin’s shoulder from behind: “Help me, Elgin. I can save you. I can save all of you. I can help you go back home.”
Clara talks to Elgin, and he snaps out of it. She asks if he is alright. He looks weird. He says he is fine. Clara says she likes the collage of photos, then leaves. Elgin looks at Fatima’s photo again. The mummified woman is no longer in the photo behind Fatima.
25 — In the Bar, Jade says that the fact that the matters repeat means there is a pattern somewhere. Ethan says the “2” in this slip of paper is backward. Jade says some of the sevens are backward sometimes, too. Ethan asks why, but Jade doesn’t know. That’s why they need to figure out the pattern. If they can figure out the pattern then they can figure out the shape. Ethan continues to study the puzzle.
Jade sits next to Tabitha at the next table. He tells her not to worry about those freaky children. They won’t harm her. Tabitha asks how he is so sure of that. Jade says they need her help. Tabitha says she doesn’t know. She is basing that on a vision a woman saw 40 years ago.
Tabitha looks at a sketch drawn by Jade a few days ago and she asks what is this. Jade says he drew some wards scattered around the settlement. He guesses these are protective. Jade suddenly notices Tabitha’s face.
Tabitha sees images in her mind that look like memories triggered by the sight of that ward. Tabitha is a young girl, less than age 6. Jade hears Tabitha utter the words: “Three red stones.” She asks Jade if he saw three red stones in a circle. Jade asks how she knew.
Tabitha says when she was a little girl, she had the same nightmare over and over again. It wasn’t just Miranda. Tabitha saw this place too. But she just didn’t know it.
